Book Review - Mastering the Hype Cycle: How to Choose the Right Innovation at the Right Time By Jackie Fenn and Mark Raskino
It happens almost without fail for every new technology and innovation... A new idea becomes a hot buzzword destined to change the world. Then the euphoria bubble pops and no one wants anything to do with it. But over time, the core concepts become ingrained in the day-to-day flow of business, and reality finally emerges. This "hype cycle" is exactly what Jackie Fenn and Mark Raskino cover in their book Mastering the Hype Cycle: How to pick the Right Innovation at the Right Time. Giv

Dangerous Ignorance: Report from Tribune’s “Innovation Officer”
A pal sent along this “Think Piece” report from Tribune Co.’s “Innovation Officer” Lee Abrams. It’s based on his recent visit to the struggling, shrunken, limp-on-the pole “flagship” Florida Sentinel papers in Orlando and South Florida. I don’t know Abrams and do not wish him sick personally. Hell, he’s known as the “inventor” of the album-oriented rock radio format, the ’70s answer to Top 40 pablum and, later, the vital cultural firewall against disco. Many of his contemporaries [he's in hi

The Naming of Things
I’d like to do a bit here on language. Primarily on how we have seen it distorted over the last few decades. According to George Lakoff and Geoff Nunberg, the Right has seized the rhetorical high-ground and driven Liberals into defensive postures by altering or subverting the meanings of certain words and phrases. I tend to think that, yes, they’ve done that, but that also the people who are swayed by such verbal gymnastics are by and big pre-sold on the message. Many of us out here never

Abrams: More Sex, Religion, Stars ... and Gay Florida!
The Sun-Sentinel's front page story this morning is both important and provocative. Reporter Jennifer Gollan found that Broward's cities face a $1.1 billion shortfall in their pension programs. The in-depth story's headline: "Were City Workers Nest Eggs Too Generous?" Leading the Metro section is a story by Jon Burstein and Kathy Bushouse about millions of dollars in lost and stolen school board equipment. Again, depthy reporting that challenges the takers of our tax money. It's a solid --

Stop With the Scrambling Already!
I don’t rant much on this blog. But I’m about to…so if you’re not in the mood, then you might as well mark this one read. If you don’t mind, though, I’m going to talk my mind on this one, because it’s bugging me. I’ve been noticing some disturbing trends on my travels around the Internetz lately. There seems to be a lot of scrambling going on. People seem rather preoccupied with trying to be the next, big, popular thing. Some are trying to elbow their way to the top of the blogosphere. Others

Film Review: Quantum of Solace
Bottom Line: every-out thriller with few Bond touches but plenty of high-octane action. The Hollywood Reporter By Ray Bennett Oct 24, 2008 Opens: Friday, Oct. 31 (U.K.); Friday, Nov. 14 (U.S.) LONDON — The meanest and leanest James Bond film yet, “Quantum of Solace” is a breathless splash of high-speed action that hurtles from one reckless chase to another. There’s not much solace and few words as the British secret agent exercises his license to kill in dispatching one bad guy after an

I should make a list.
It’s official. I’ve finally gotten to the point in my life sans former profession where I feel like I need an additional six hours a day added to my clock. I’m glad to say that in contrast to my former need for six hours extra *delete rant that was to have been inserted here…*, I’m happily feeling that I not only need to receive every that I have to receive done…done…I want to. It does not mean, nor will it ever, that I am perky, however. It does mean that I just may have to blow the dust off my cal

Player vs. Game Values
One issue I take with the majority of early readings, callois and dekoven especially, is that games do have impact on our lives. They do create product, unlike what callois says, typically in the form or credibility or bragging rights, and can even construct the social order of a group. Although possibly unfair, this credibility bears impact on business opportunites, relationships, and many other aspects of life. These products both shape and respond to the values of the players. I've found

"We're Going on an Adventure"
These were the words a primary school teacher said to her young class as I was walking the Tan last week. And in some ways I have felt my life overseas for 20 years has been just that. When we had the opportunity to move to Singapore from London I was very positive and keen for a new adventure. I have worked most of that time, retiring from corporate marketing 3 years ago to start another adventure of life beyond work and if every goes well we are due back in Melbourne in June 09 for another
